- Call of Duty 4 was recently reported as having a "monstrously huge" online community of players on the PlayStation Network and Sony isn't flinching at those comments. With SOCOM: Confrontation due out in a handful of months, it's not all that shocking that Sony feels confident and not threatened by the success that Call of Duty 4 has shown. After all, Sony's hit franchise is known to be a success no matter who it is up against.
SOCOM will feature 32-player online matches across seven maps, while also implementing character customization and the ability to choose different weapons depending on the situation. The game will also promote clan play that will allow you to setup with free agents or friends and pick a squad leader.
"Featuring some of the most highly trained Special Forces regiments in the world, SOCOM: Confrontation is, like all true military scenarios, all about strategy and teamwork," explains Sony. "Reward your troops not only when they are brave and fearless but when they use intelligence and work as a team. Trawl the world for the best soldiers to strengthen your team as you lead your men against other highly skilled outfits."
On top of all of this, Sony plans to host tournaments on a weekday/weekend basis that will offer up different times so everyone is able to take part in at least one. They are also going to make sure that these tournaments are split based on a regional and global basis.
According to Sony, SOCOM will feature "unrivaled community features with increased clan & ladder support."
SOCOM will be available the same way GT5: Prologue and Warhawk was made available, by either downloading via the PlayStation Network or buying it in stores. Chances are the game will be released with a bundled headset for those who are still looking for one. One of the current rumors is it will be bundled with a first-party headset made by Sony. We'll keep you up to date on any further news related to this game.
