you do inside the parentheses so (9+3)

then they become multiplication

basically how it looks is : 48 / 2 * (9+3)

so parentheses : 48 / 2 * (12)
you then do left to right division/multiplication (they have the same order/priority)
= 24 * (12)
then multiplication
= 288

to get 2 the function would have to be in the form

48 / (2 * ( 9 + 3 ) )

so add multiply by 2 then divide by 48 and your answer is 2

If a number or variable is in parentheses it becomes the first calculation. Even with your way of doing it the answer is 2. 48 / 2 * (12) = 48 / 2 *1(12) = 48 / 2 * 12 = 48 / 24 = 2

When you have something like 2(12), it is the equivalent of 2*12 and does not take priority over divisions or other multiplications. Its 288. Sorry now.
