A brain has nothing over a program when regardless of the problem, there's a process that MUST be followed, so its simple calculations at that point. the problem is you aren't following the method.

Its left to right like I stated for addition/multiplication and addition/subtraction. Regardless of it being 5 x 3 or 5(3) they would be done at the same time. 5(3) has no precedence over 5 x 3.

No it is the problem the way it was set up in my post was just the way google showed it....division or multiplication does not take over one or the other it's read left to right if the division is first then you do that math first..... umm why are we still arguing about this?

I'm pretty sure you're repeating what I just said, unless you're unable to read. Did I not solve 9+3 first? After that comes multiplication which would be 2(12). Then comes division, which would be 48/24. I don't understand where I'm wrong. Please explain where my order or operations is wrong?

......You don't continue to do the math where the parenthesis are....you go back to doing to equation left to right....there are however different ways to get different answers clearly by the forum link I put up, what I'm still not understanding is how in the hell we are still talking about this...

48/2(9+3), as written, is two. Since there is no sign between the 2 and the (9+3), it's assumed that they are both part of the divisor. If it was written as 48/2x(9+3), THEN it would be 288.

The fucking order of operations says multiplication before division. SOOOO 2(12) is the next step because guess what? 2(12) is multiplication.

multiplication and division have the same priority, they are processed left to right from the start of the equation

addition and subtraction have the same priority, they also are processed left to right from the start of the equation

One of my buddies is a math teacher. He looked at this and gave me two. Because there isn't a sign between 2 & (9+3), they are both part of the divisor, which makes it 48 / 2(12) = 48 / 24 = 2.

42/2x12

Multiplication has NO PRECIDENCE over division which means you calculate from LEFT TO RIGHT.

42/2(12)
=24(12)
=288
